Very few inventions are ready for market. Indeed, there is still a long time to mature before launching the first marketable and profitable product.
We're taking part with Calyos as our guest from 9 to 13 April 2025.
For inventors, the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions has always been the place to showcase their inventions and has been for 50 years.
As part of its 35th anniversary, the European Space Agency's Gateway Commercialization Department has agreed to participate with a brand-new central stand from 9 to 13 April 2025, and CREACTION has proposed to ESA the presence of one of its (former) customers, Calyos SA / Nivelles, a company in full expansion. Calyos was born of a transfer of space technology from the manufacture of two-phase loops for satellites and the aerospace industry.
From satellite components to reliable locomotive generators
On satellites, two-phase loops are used to balance the temperatures of on-board electrical loads. This operation is passive, virtually continuous and maintenance-free. As far as ground transfer is concerned, Calyos worked with Alstom, a manufacturer of trains and automated transport systems, on the CALYPOWER: a line of 2-phase cooling solutions for Power Electronics applications equipped with power modules. Based on the 2-phase technology of Capillary Pumped Loop, CALYPOWER enables the design of disruptive Power Conversion systems, combining High Performance Cooling (thanks to the vaporization of the working fluid) and Passivity (thanks to the suppression of mechanical pumps and fans). The results? Space savings for generators and minimal maintenance costs. Today, Calyos is one of Europe's leading companies in this field. And it's inventing more than ever, from the smallest mems to the largest telescopes.
A final word on innovation
The exhibition's advertising reads as follows: “Each year, over 825 exhibitors from 35 countries present their exclusive inventions, research and new products, ready to be marketed.”
While the number of participants is high (850) and the number of visitors is close to 25,000 people interested in the event, the last remark “ready to market” needs to be tempered somewhat! Very few inventions are ready for market. Indeed, there is still a long time to mature before launching the first marketable and profitable product. This minimalizes the tasks and work involved in final testing, production, safeguarding intellectual and industrial rights, the analysis and strategic marketing of the future product, as well as the necessary financing and investment.
The advantage of transferring a space technology for a terrestrial application is that it's already been tried and tested - in a completely different context, of course. And who can do more, can do less; it's all about adapting to the conditions of the “new” market. We can already point to the results of successful tests, the costs of the first prototypes outside space conditions, the first prior art studies, certain recurring tooling... in short, a whole series of advances outside terrestrial integration conditions.
Don't hesitate to contact us if you need to solve a recurring technical problem in your company, if you have an idea for improving your process or, like Calyos, if you want to develop a new business based on an innovative idea. We'll work with you and on your behalf to find suitable space solutions; very often, these will lead to rapid, tangible improvements in your process-product portfolio. What's more, with ESA and LSA, we offer you the opportunity to co-finance the feasibility of your idea up to a maximum of 75,000 euros, and to participate in financing the protection of your idea up to a maximum of 10,000 euros. See conditions on our website, in the Space Technology Transfer section.
